Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 Installation with Screenshots

In this article we will perform Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 step by step installation with screenshots using ISO image . As we know Red Hat Enterprise Linux is abbreviated as RHEL.  it’s developed by RedHat Inc. for commercial use. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 was released on November 5, 2019 with Linux Kernel 4.18.0-147, which support for the following  architectures.

  • AMD and Intel 64-bit architectures
  • The 64-bit ARM architecture
  • IBM Power Systems, Little Endian
  • IBM Z

Red Hat Enterprise (RHEL) Linux 8 (Ootpa) was released on May 7, 2019 based on Fedora 28 with Linux Kernel 4.18.0-80. After six months Red Hat released the most major update of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 with significant improvements to manageability, security, and hybrid cloud performance. RHEL 8.1 is the first RHEL release in Red Hat’s new plan of minor releases every six months.
Following are the key product enhancement.
a. Kpatch which enable you to Live patching for the kernel to consume Critical and Important CVEs fixes without reboot system.
b. In-place upgrade from RHEL 7.6 to RHEL 8.1 is supported in-place upgrade on the following architectures i.e.
– 64-bit ARM
– IBM POWER (little endian)
– IBM Z
c. pre-upgrade system assessment with cockpit-leapp plug-in.
d. UEFI is now supported.
e. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 is distributed through two main repositories:
– BaseOS
– AppStrem

Supported CPU Architectures are:

  • AMD and Intel 64-bit architectures
  • The 64-bit ARM architecture
  • IBM Power Systems, Little Endian
  • IBM Z

Step 1: Sign Up & Download RHEL 8.1 ISO image
Download the ISO image for your system architecture. You need to sign up and login for a free trial on Red Hat Website.

Once ISO image is downloaded, create a bootable device (USB/DVD). This process might be different depending what Operating System you are using.
Step 2: Boot with DVD or ISO file 
Insert or boot with bootable device after changing booting sequence from BIOS/UEFI. By default “Test this media & install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1.0” is selected. This will test and verify the integrity of installation media and proceed for installation. You may ignore the testing of media, select “Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1.0 as shown below screen to install RHEL 8.1

Step 3: Choose language during installation.

Step 4: Installation Summary – Here, complete marked items to begin installation:-

  • Time Zone
  • Kdump (enabled/disabled)
  • Software Selection (Packages)
  • Installation Destination
  • Networking and Hostname
  • Security Policies & System purpose


Step 5: Time Zone setting 
Select your time zone and “Time & Date” format and click on “Done”.

Step 6: Software Selection
By default, installer will select Server with GUI as software packages and if you want to change it then click on “Software Selection” option and choose your preferred “Base Environment”. Select applications of your choice to be install from right section of below screen.

Step 7: Installation Destination
Once you click on “Installation Destination” it will redirect to setup disk partitions. You can partition your system as per your need. Then, click “Done”Here, we will show you to do the custom partition.

Step 8: Manual Partitioning –
Here, we will use Standard Partition. We have created three partition as below. While creating partition you can choose file system type of choice (vfat, ext3, ext4, xfs etc. )
a. /boot – Where Linux Kernel is reside and load kernel from /boot.
b. swap – This is being used when there is a shortage of RAM
c. / – root partitions contains all configuration and filesystem to run Red Hat Linux

Click on “Done” button once partition is created. .

Click on “Accept Changes”.

Step 9: In the network & Hostname section, you can configure the system Hostname and Network. Assign IP address and other details, click on “save”.

Assign Hostname of your choice and click on “Done”

Step 10: From “System Purpose” section specify Role, Red Hat Service Level Agreement and Usage of this system.  You can change as per requirement of leave this option as it is.

Step 11: Installation Summary – Click on “Begin Installation” 

Step 12: Set root password (This need to be note down, it may require in future.)

Step 13: Installation done click on  “Reboot”

Step 15: Post reboot – Initial Setup click on License agreement section.



Step 16: Create local user.

Step 17: Login Screen

Step 18: After successful login, you will get couple of welcome windows and follow till finish.
