Oracle Linux 8 Installation Steps with Screenshots

Oracle Linux (OL) earlier known as Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) is freely distributed by Oracle and it is complied by Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source code and the same is being used by Oracle Cloud and Oracle Engineered Systems such as Oracle Exadata. This tutorial provides Oracle Linux 8 step by step installation guide with screenshots. Download Oracle Linux 8 from Oracle edelivery website after registering with Oracle Website.
Prerequisites:
1. ISO file or DVD
2. Internet access to download ISO and update system post-installation

Oracle Linux Installation Steps:
Step 1 – Insert Oracle Linux 8 Bootable Media or boot from ISO file.
By default “Test this media & Install Oracle Linux 8.1.0” is selected. This will check the integrity of the installation media and starts the installation. You may ignore it and “Select Install Oracle Linux 8.1.0” from the menu below.

Step 2 – Select your Language of your choice and click on “Continue”.

Step 3 – You are being redirected to “INSTALLATION SUMMARY” screen. You must complete marked items depending on your requirements to Begin Installation. Here, In the “INSTALLATION SUMMARY” screen, you can change many items for your host like
  • Keyboard Layout
  • Installation Source
  • Installation destination
  • Language Support
  • Software Selection
  • KDUMP
  • Time & Date
  • Network & Host Name
  • Security Policy
Step 4 – Time & Date
Select your Region, City & Time format and click on “Done” button.
Step 5 – Software Selection
Select “Base Environment” of your choice and select extra software if you want to be installed from “Add-Ons for Selected Environment” and click on “Done” button.
Step 6 – INSTALLATION DESTINATION

On Installation Destination screen, select your disk to install Oracle Linux 8. You can change the partitions manually or else use Automatic partitioning if you are a beginner. Here, we are doing manual partitions of Drive.

Step 7 – INSTALLATION DESTINATION (contd.)
Here, we can do LVM, LVM Thin Provisioning partitions. we are selecting “Standard Partitions”.
Step 8 – INSTALLATION DESTINATION (contd.)
We will be creating following partitions.
  • /boot
  • SWAP
  • /

 

Once selected Standard Partitions, creating /boot partition.
Step 9 – INSTALLATION DESTINATION (contd.), Creating SWAP partition.

Step 10 – INSTALLATION DESTINATION (contd.), Creating ROOT partition.

Step 11 – Manual Partitions(Contd.), Verify Partitions and Click on “Done” to proceed further.
Step 12 – Manual Partitions (Contd.) click on “Accept Changes”.
Note: You can change or modify the partitions clicking on “Cancel & Return to Custom Partitioning”.
Step 13 – Network & Host Name setting.
On “NETWORK & HOST NAME” screen, enter “Host Name” and set “ON” switch for Ethernet Card and click On “Done” button.
Step 14 – Security Policy
You may select the Security Policy of your choice else this can be ignored.
Step 15 – Enable KDUMP
Kdump is a kernel crash dumping mechanism. 
Step 15 – Begin Installation
Step 16 – Set Root Password
Step 17 – User creation
Step 18 – Installation is complete. Eject Installation media and reboot to finish the installation.
Step 19 – Post Installation Steps

Step 20 – LICENSING
Accept Oracle Linux License Agreement and click on “Done”

Step 21 – Login Screen post installation
 
Step 22 – Follow screen to finish post installation steps.

Step 23 – Update your system.
$ sudo dnf update
