openSUSE Tumbleweed Installation with Screenshots

openSUSE Tumbleweed is a rolling release meaning it will get updates regularly and always contains newest packages that include Linux kernel, SAMBA, git, desktops, office applications etc. This release is recommended for developers, advanced user who wants their software updated and wants to contribute to openSUSE (openSUSE Contributors). It’s stable a distro, not a beta release to the LEAP. In this post, we are going to demonstrate the installation of openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling release.
Recommended System Requirements

  • 2Ghz dual core processor or better
  • 2GB system memory
  • 40GB of free hard drive space
  • DVD drive or USB port for the installation media
  • Internet access for the Network Installer

Download openSUSE Tumbleweed ISO.

a. Verify downloaded ISO file before use. So that correct ISO file got downloaded not some broken version.
b. Run command as sha256sum –check on the sha256 file to make sure the iso is intact.
c. Signed checksum file download from here.

d. Boot from ISO or DVD/USB Stick after changing the BIOS or UEFI. 
Step 1: Installation Option
First screen once boot from ISO or DVD/USB, please select “Installation” to continue.


Step 2: Language. Keyboard and License Agreement
Choose Language, Keyboard layout and License Agreement as per your choice and click “Next” to continue.


Step 3: Activate online repository
Repository will be downloaded online. If you don’t want to download click “No“.


Step 4: Select Desktop Environment
Here, i have selected Desktop with KDE Plasma Desktop Environment. You can pick your choice and  click “Next” to continue.

Step 5: Partitioning Scheme
If you are a new user, we recommend to choose auto partitioning scheme. Here, we have selected Export Partitioner scheme.  You can choose a Export Partitioner if you are a experienced user. We will show you how the Export Partitioner steps can be done in our next openSUSE LEAP 15.1 article.


Step 6: Verify Partitioning Scheme
In this step you can modify the partitioning if you want else click “Accept” to continue.


Step 7: Select Region and Time Zone
Select your Region and Time Zone of your choice. You can click on “Other Settings” to configure NTP and click “Next”


Step 8: Local User Creation
Please create a user and set password for user to login. This is a normal user and you can “Skip User Creation” as i have skipped it.


Step 9: set “root” password
Please set root password and remember it, this credential is required post installation.

Step 10: Verify and Confirm Installation Settings.
Review Installation Settings, you can modify the settings clicking the name and you can be allowed to change the settings. Click “Install” to continue




Step 11: Confirm Installation
You need to confirm installation. Click “Back” if you want to change or modify the installation settings.





Step 12: Installation Started
Performing Installation, you can see the progress as below. System will auto reboot once installation is finished.



Step 13: openSUSE Tumbleweed reboot from Hard disk.


Step 14: openSUSE Tumbleweed Login screen.
Login with “root” user and password which was set during installation earlier.
