Kali Linux Operating System is aimed for penetration testers and security experts based on Debian Linux system developed and maintained by Offensive Security. The earlier name was BackTrack Linux. It comes with pre-installed penetration testing tools such as nmap, wireshark, john the ripper, aircrack-ng, burp suite etc. Kali Linux supports i386, amd64 and ARM platforms. Kali Linux OS is the best platform if you are a security enthusiast or ethical hacker aspirant . Learning how to install Kali Linux is the first step. In this tutorials we will see the installation steps of Kali Linux with screenshots.
Note: If you are looking for a Linux Operating System to learn, Kali Linux is not an ideal distribution for you. To get your hands dirty start with Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu or Linux Mint distributions.
Installing Kali Linux
Step 1 – Download Kali Linux. The Kali Linux images are available to download as “.iso/.img” file or via “.torrent” files.
Step 2 – Boot your system with downloaded ISO or DVD, you will be shown Kali boot screen. Choose “Graphical install”.
Step 3 – Select your preferred language
Step 4 – Select your Location or Country, this will be used to set time zone.
Step 5 – Configure your Keyboard with the appropriate keymap
Step 6 – Configure the package Manager
Step 7 – Installer will prompt for Network Configuration & Hostname for your system.
Step 8 – You may optionally provide a default domain name for this system to use.
Step 9 – Set up users and passwords, set full name for the new user.
Step 10 – Set username for your account.
Step 11 – Set password for user “teclues” created earlier.
Step 12 – Installer will prompt for disk partitions. Here, we are using “Guided-use entire disk” method, not configuring LVM (Logical Volume Manager). Expert users can use the “Manual” partition method.
Step 13 – Partition Disks. Selected disk will be erased.
Step 14 – Partition disks. we have choose to keep all your files in a single partition. You may choose as per your needs to have separate partitions.
Step 15 – Partition disks. Review your disk partitions before installer make a changes. Click on “Continue”.
Step 16 – Partition disks. Select “Yes” and click on “Continue”.
Step 17 – Configure the package manager. Kali Linux uses a central repository to distribute applications. You need to enter appropriate proxy settings or leave it blank.
Step 18 – Configure the package manager
Note: If you select YES in this screen, you will not be able to install packages from Kali repositories.
Step 19 – Select software and install
select packages you would like to install and click on “Continue”.
Step 20 – Install GRUB boot loader on a hard disk and click on “Continue”.
Step 21 – Installation of Kali Linux is complete. Please remove bootable media and click on “Continue” to reboot into your new system.
Step 22 – Post Installation Screen. Login with user which was created in earlier steps.
