How to install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop with Screenshots

This post will perform the installation of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop Version. Canonical has released Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Version on 23 April, 2020. Installation of Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop is pretty simple, user-friendly and straightforward. That’s way this is the best release to date for enterprise and home users. Let’s look the installation steps and summary of upgraded software and new features below.

a. Linux Kernel Version 5.4 which has improved hardware support, WireGuard VPN support & Integration with Livepatch (reboot-free kernel updates).
b. Ships with GNOME Desktop 3.36
c. glibc 2.31, OpenJDK 11,  Python 3.8.2, php 7.4, perl 5.30 and golang 1.13

Begin Installation of Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop

Step 1. Download Ubuntu 
Download Ubuntu 20.04 ISO Image. Ubuntu desktop supports 64-bit Architecture only.  
Step 2. Boot with Ubuntu Installation Media
Insert bootable media (DVD/USB) and start your system after changing BIOS/UEFI settings. Installer will take time to boot and will check available filesystem, press “Ctrl+c” to cancel it.
Step 3. Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu Desktop
Ubuntu Installer present screen below to “Try Ubuntu” and “Install Ubuntu”. We recommend to choose “Try Ubuntu” to see the look an feel of Ubuntu 20.04 before proceeding for installation.
Step 4. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Live Operating System
Ubuntu Installer take you to the fully ready to use Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop Live OS wherein you can play around. Once you are ready for installation, click on Install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ICON on desktop shown below.
Step 5.  Choose Language of your choice
Step 6. Choose your preferred keyboard layout
Step 7. Installation type
You will be asked to choose the installation type “Normal Installation” or “Minimal Installation”. Also on “other options” choose whether you want to install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats. You may choose option “Download updates while installing Ubuntu” if you have internet available on your system.
Step 8. Choose Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Installation type.
Ubuntu installer provide you to choose two installation type.
. Erase Disk & Install Ubuntu – Select this option if you are a new Ubuntu user which will create partitions for your automatically. New option “Advanced feature” is available where we can do LVM partitions.
. Something else – Manual partitions scheme.
Step 9. Installation Type
In this post we will choose “Something else” and will create the partitions below.
/boot – 500MB
SWAP – 2GB
/ – Remaining Space
To create a partitions, select “New Partition Table” click on “Continue”

 

Step 10. Installation Type

 

In this screen, select free space and click on “+” sign and then specify the size of the partition, Mount point, file system. Creating “/boot” partition of Size 500MB.
Creating “SWAP” partition of Size 2GB.
Creating slash “/” partition of remaining size.

 

 

Step 11. Installation Type

 

You should see the manually created partitions, Verify and click on “Install Now” to proceed.

 

Choose “Continue” to write changes to the disk.
Step 12. Select your location to set time zone.
Step 13. Enter Hostname and local User and Password details.

 

Step 14. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Installation started.

 

In below screen, we can see the installation is in progress.
Step 15. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop Installation is complete, installer prompt for reboot the system. Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop will prompt to remove bootable media.
Step 16. Login Screen post Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS installation
Step 17. Post installation Steps. Follow the screens below to finish installation.
