Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 Installation Steps with Screenshots

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 codename “Plow” was released on May’2022 with lots of new features that supports applications across physical, virtual, hybrid cloud and edge environments. In this post, we are going to walk you through the steps by steps Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 installation with screenshots.

1. Download Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0

Get an authentic copy of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, create a developer account clicking here. Download the ISO image once user is created. No-cost for developer subscription. Once ISO image is downloaded, create a bootable device (USB/DVD). This process might be different depending on Operating System you are using. On windows, you can use rufus, if you are a linux user, you can use “dd” or “ddrescue” command.

Type the following command to write in bootable USB stick. On the following command “/dev/sdx” is the target bootable USB stick.
$ sudo ddrescue -f -v rhel-9-x86_64.iso /dev/sdx

2. Boot with bootable media (USB/DVD) to start installation process.

Following screen will present once the system bootup.

3. Installation Wizard

After sometime installer wizard will start. Select your preferred language and click on “Continue“.

4. Installation Summary

Here, complete the sections which are marked to begin installation. There are following sections.

  • LOCALIZATION
  • SOFTWARE
  • SYSTEM
  • USER SETTINGS

5. Software selection

There are two sections “Base Environment” & “Additional software for Selected Environment” to customize the software installed with the operating system. Select your preferred software and click on “Done“.

6. Installation Destination

Choose disk partition scheme as “Automatic” or “Custom” . For intermediate user can choose “Automatic” and Experienced user may choose “Custom” scheme. In this post, we are choosing Custom partition scheme.

7. Manual Partitioning

Following are the basic partitions which need to create for installation. We will be creating following partitions for demo.

/boot – 1GB [Recommended size]
SWAP – 4GB [Double or one third of physical RAM]
/ – Rest all available space. [Remaining space]

Note: You may opt with Automatic LVM partitioning scheme for custom storage partition also.

Below snippet depict the complete partitions, click on “Done“.

Click on “Accept Changes” as per below.

8. Set Root Password

Under “USER SETTINGS” section, set “Root Password” and remember it which may require to perform administrative tasks later.

9. Hostname & Network Configuration

Under “Network & Host Name” section, you may set “Hostname” & configure network configuration. Click on “Done” which will take you to Installation Summary screen.

10 Begin Installation

From INSTALLATION SUMMARY screen, click on “Begin Installation” to start installation.

11. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 installation started.

Be patient, installation is now started, this may take some time.

Installer wizard prompt to reboot the system once installation is complete. Remove installation media and click on “Reboot System“.
