Debian Linux 11 (Bullseye) Installation Guide

Debian is the oldest and widely used Linux Operating system which was established by Ian Murdock in August 16, 1993. Debian also known as GNU/Linux distribution has released it’s Debian 11.1 on October 9th, 2021.  In this post, we are going to see the installation steps of Newly release Debian Linux 11.1

What’s new in the distribution?

Debian 11 includes over 11294 new packages, for a total of over 59551 packages. Following are the software updates.
. LibreOffice 7.0
. Calligre 3.2
. GNUcash 4.4
. Gnome 3.38, KDE Plasma 5.20, LXDE 11, LXQt 0.16, MATE 1.24 AND Xfce 4.16

Create and boot with bootable Media CDs/DVDs/USB sticks.

You can use the utilities like Etcher , Unetbootin, & Rufus. Create a bootable media once the ISO image is downloaded, insert and boot a system with recently created bootable media, enter into the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, press combination of keys after turning on the system. Usually Delete or the F2 key, but some manufacturers use other keys. Upon starting the system there will be a message stating which key to press to enter the setup screen. After bootup the system Debian 11 Installer splash screen will be shown as below. Select “Graphical Install” and press “Enter” key to proceed installation.

Choose Language

Select Language of your choice and click “Continue“.

Location

Select you location based on time zone will be set.

Configure the keyboard

Choose the keyboard layout.

Configure the Network

Debian installer detects installed ethernet controller on the system

Hostname and Domain

Set a Hostname and Domain for the system

Setup Root Password

Debian Installer ask you to set a password for Root user (Keep the password in safe vault).

Set up a non-administrative user and passwords

Disk Partitions

Debian Installer prompt for disk partitioning screen. Here, you can choose options “Guided – use entire disk“. However, we are using “Guided – use entire disk and set-up LVM” to manage disks with Logical Volume Manager as both are auto partitioning schemes.

Partitioning Method:

Guided – use entire disk : Auto partitioning method that uses full disk to create required partitions.
Guided – use entire disk and set up LVM : Uses full disk and creates partitions automatically usig LVM.
Guided – use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM : Uses full disk and creates partitions with encrypted LVM automatically.
Manual – As name suggested, this is for experience  users to create partitions manually.

Click “Continue” to confirm, note that the selected disk will be erased.

Partitioning Scheme

Write the changes to disks and configure LVM

Amount of volume group to use for guided partitioning.

Following partitions is created and going to be formatted, click “Yes” to write the changes to disk.

Install the base system

Configure package manager

Select “No” to scan another installation media.

Configure the package manager

Use a network mirror if you have reasonably good internet connection to install a graphical desktop environment.

Debian archive mirror country

Debian archive mirror contd.., usually deb.debian.org is a good choice. 

Configure the package manager

Specify proxy details else click on “Continue” if you are not using proxy server.

Select “No” to participate in the package usage survey and click on “Continue”.

Software selection

Select the predefined collections of software that suits to your requirement. Also recommended to select SSH server.

Install the GRUB boot loader

Installation complete

Make sure to remove installation media and click on “Continue“. This will reboot the system.

Post Login Screen

Login with the user and password created in earlier steps.
